Poetry Winners – Something to Celebrate
The MAC is more than just paintings – we also do poetry and were delighted to receive nearly 100 entrants to the Cultural Arts Commission’s 2012 poetry contest. And the winners are:
First Place: “Winterlong,” by Kendall Bell of Riverside (Bell also received an honorable mention for another of his poems);
Second Place: “Almost Summer, penned by Rebecca Baum of Browns Mills;
Third Place: ”Tuesday Night She was in My Dreams,” also by Kendall Bell.
Honorable mention was awarded to the following poets (in no particular order): Robert Spice (Medford); Linda Gamble (Burlington), Ingrid Schoen (Medford); Jennifer Heine-Baughman (Medford); Monica Sprague (Willingboro); Edward Perrino (Delran).
Heartbeat of the MAC
One of the great rewards of volunteering at the MAC is rubbing shoulders with friendly, talented and dedicated volunteers. We’re about half-way through our fourth year of operation at the Center on Main Street and the folks who organize exhibits, mount concerts, plan art classes, schedule poetry readings and present children’s programs are as dedicated and selfless as ever. I am sure the general public who attends our various events has no idea of the hard work all these volunteers put in to make the MAC a success. You know who you are – and it’s nice to know you all!
Speaking of volunteers, we could really use some fresh hosts at the MAC on Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. It’s very pleasant to welcome visitors who come to see our fabulous exhibits or check out our other activities. We ask as little as two hours per month on a flexible schedule. And you get to hear what’s happening and check out the new exhibits before the public does. If you can help, please call the MAC at 609-654-6033 and leave a message for our volunteer coordinator, Yole Patterson. A volunteer herself, she has one of the hardest jobs at the MAC and will be grateful for your call.
Medford is fortunate to have a great many volunteers who sustain the many civic and community groups who make our town perk. Why not pick one and join in? You get to meet the nicest people!

PRESENTING PROGRAMS IN THE VISUAL, PERFORMING AND LITERARY ARTS
The Medford Arts Center opened in the heart of Medford Village in June, 2009. Its historic 1880s Victorian home provides art galleries, classrooms and intimate performance spaces. The Medford Arts Center is a true community center for all the arts, showcasing painting, musical performances, poetry and children’s programs. It is an independent nonprofit corporation operated entirely by volunteers.
